On Photography Cambodia is an initiative to establish a self-sustaining photographic education program in Cambodia for Cambodians run by Cambodians.

Acting as a catalyst for this initiative, On Photography Cambodia: Through a story of “the Building” is a photographic art project that focuses on one of the city’s enduring icons, the Municipal Apartments at Bassac river front. Project is supported by UNESCO and Bophana Audiovisual Center.

Through the use of historical, family album, participatory and professional images from the 1960s until today, the project is an exploration of the initial vision and plans for the city and social housing as well as more contemporary issues concerning urban development and land dispossession.  Through this work,
the Building becomes a metaphor for Phnom Penh’s history, present-day Cambodian issues and what the future holds for the country.

On Photography Cambodia: Through a story of “the Building” also lays the basis for a dialogue and visioning of the future of photography in Cambodia.  The project is hosting a national symposium entitled “On Photography Cambodia: future prospects” that aims to explore the role of the still image in Cambodian culture and society today and tomorrow.

The international exhibition of the project  is to be launched with the Cambodian opening and the national symposium in Fbruary 2009 in partnership with Bophana Audiovisual Resource Center in Phnom Penh.
